Prices and data

Where do your prices come from?

Currency rates come from ExchangeRate-API and an open-source currency API, gold and silver from Gold API, and crypto from CoinGecko, with backups. Every tool shows its source and last update time. Full details are on our methodology page.

How often are prices updated?

Gold, silver and crypto refresh about every 3 to 4 minutes while a page is open. Currency reference rates are published by our providers roughly once a day, so they change less often.

Why is my bank's exchange rate different from yours?

We show the mid-market rate, the midpoint between wholesale buy and sell prices. Banks, card issuers and exchange offices usually add a markup to that rate, and some add fees on top. Our guide to the mid-market rate vs bank rate shows how to calculate the difference.

Why does a jeweler or coin dealer charge more than your gold price?

Our gold price is the wholesale spot price. Coins, bars and jewelry include premiums for manufacturing, distribution, dealer margin, design and sometimes tax. See how gold prices are set.

Why do prices not change at the weekend?

Most currency and precious metal markets close from Friday evening until Monday morning in Asia, so prices usually stay at the last trading level. Crypto trades 24/7 and keeps moving.

What do the green ▲ and red ▼ arrows mean?

They show the change compared with the previous day for currencies and silver, and over the last 24 hours for gold and crypto. Green means the price rose, red means it fell.

How do you calculate the gold price per gram?

We divide the spot price per troy ounce by 31.1034768, the number of grams in a troy ounce.

How is the price of 22K, 18K or 14K gold calculated?

Multiply the pure gold price per gram by the karat divided by 24. For example, 18K is 18 ÷ 24 = 75% gold. The gold calculator does it for any weight and currency, and our guide to 14K vs 18K vs 22K vs 24K gold explains the differences.

How much will a buyer pay for my old gold jewelry?

Work out the melt value first (weight × price per gram for its karat). Scrap buyers usually pay a percentage of that value. Our guide on how to sell gold jewelry shows how to compare offers.
